Reflective essay 2

I got several of benefits from LSC 1003 course; it will help me in my academic life. I learnt in this course how to organize my ideas before writing an essay in a simple outline, then how to search for the information from different sources and keep the reference when I write the essay. Also, I learnt how to quote a sentence from a text in my essay.
This process will help me in the future to write my researches and reports in a proper academic style. Farther more, I will avoid being oppressive by putting the citation for the reference whenever I get the information from any source text. When I learn new writing skills, I'll apply these new techniques and use them to write any essay or a research in different academic ways.
I can improve my writing skills by reading different books or journals to learn from them new vocabulary and recognize the different writing styles of professional authors. In addition, reading is very important because the more a person reads the more ideas he can generate because reading expands your knowledge. Also, I can improve my writing style by training myself and practice writing continuously, due to the fact that practice makes perfect. Moreover, if I pick different topics and write about them and then my teacher for example corrects my piece of writing, I will know my weaknesses and mistakes so I can work on my weaknesses and avoid making the same mistakes and with time I will be able to write like a journalist.
I would like to learn another class like 1103 in the future, because I consider this class very important and useful for my future and it will help in doing my work in a professional way and improve my skills in English.

Essay 2

                                        Story of stuff

The products people use in everyday life didn’t come from the air, nor by a magical spell or even from wonderland. All these stuff people keep buying and using to complete their needs and demands are not as good as they think they are and not as safe as they seem. To discover the truth behind these products learn the materials economy process that goes by 5 main stages: from extraction to production to distribution to consumption to disposal. You might know these stages but wait until you hear the negligible details and listen to the invisible facts.

First of all, extraction is the action of taking out something. However, extraction is the stage where the natural resources are being used way too much and at the same time the environment is being damaged and the living creatures around us die. In order to produce anything, factories need some materials to work with like iron and wood. Moreover, the only way to get these materials is to cut down trees, breakdown the mountains and steal the water from the marine creatures but that’s not the whole problem, the big problem is that people take much more than what they need and if they continued this way the planet will no longer be available for human kind to live.

The step that follows extraction is production; the materials that were taken from the environment are going to the factories and by the use of energy to mix toxic chemicals in the financial resources to provide the people with toxic products. Furthermore, toxic stuff are almost everywhere and they are used daily for example the pillows people put their heads on them, cry over them and sleep for hours with them are highly dangerous since they were made with toxic chemical. However, these toxic chemicals are damaging the poor factory workers even more who must be having hard circumstances to work on such a horrible place like for instance their need for money in order to survive and feed their children. Nevertheless, the productions process trashes the world to get the needed materials, spread toxins around the people and finally again pollutes the earth with factories waste and no matter where the factory is located the damage is still going to reach us.

After that comes distribution, after destroying the land and then producing the new stuff from the factories the products moves to the shops to be sold, distributed and handled to the public for money. Furthermore, the store will keep gaining money and the products are going to end from the stores so more products are going to be made and nobody ever notice how much money is lost into toxic products and how much harm is caused by simply shopping!!

Next comes the consumption, where the people who are responsible for public safety, health and environment. The government, that is suppose to work day and night for our benefit and the companies everywhere who should be working to provide us with our stuff both cooperated to raise the economy by making the public spend half of their time working to gain money and the other half to lose the money in shopping for unnecessary stuff. Moreover, companies chose two methods to sell their products: planned obsolescence and perceived obsolescence. Furthermore, planned obsolescence is when people buy a new product and in no time it loses its value like coffee cups because they can’t be used more than once. Consequently, people will be forced to buy a new coffee cup each time they want to drink coffee and thus they are polluting the world and losing their salaries too.  On the other hand, perceived obsolescence is the strategies of making a person get rid of a product that is completely fine!! For example, sometimes a person might change his mobile phone even though it’s perfectly fine just because it made him look very old fashion.

The final stage of “the materials economy” process is disposal. Moreover, disposal is the action of eliminating the trash. In addition, the trash people tend to throw away once were products sold in the markets but with time people have decided to get rid of them for different reasons. However, all the trashes are immediately taken to a landfill or worse they might be burned and then taken to a landfill to release most of the dangerous toxins in all the time. As a consequence, air, land pollution and climate change is caused. Furthermore, there is a way to reduce the damage by recycling but it’s impossible to recycle all our garbage since they carry dangerous toxins and some of our trashes are unbreakable in the first place.

Consumerism is a problem that has appeared recently in UAE. Moreover, “the culture of consumption cast a shadow on the UAE society because of its openness to the world market, its economic prosperity and the high level of per capita income, which caused a lot of problems”( Vadayar, M. – 2012). Furthermore, all of these factors together made Emirati people unbelievably careless throwing their money in absolutely nothing except buying unneeded products and aiming for either the most expensive or the newest products even though they might not have that required money to buy these products they resort for debts and loans but sometimes they can’t repay for them and then they get into massive troubles and this causes most of the financial problems among Emirati individuals.

To sum up, the materials economy process is a very serious threat to the whole world and especially to the human kind. People should be aware of this problem and cooperate to stop the damage; they should work into saving forests, cheer on clean production, work in labor rights, fair trade products, renewable energy and blocking landfills because that’s the only way in order to protect the people and the environment. Everyone should work with all their power and unite together; government, companies and public to achieve this goal to stop harming the Earth and the living creatures including the human beings.

Essay 1

Smart boards

The invention that changed so much in the education methods nowadays is the SMART board, the SMART board is a reactive whiteboard produced by SMART Technologies and if’s found in our classrooms, lecture halls, group meetings and presentations across the globe. Like all the other devices we know, it went through several developments and stages before it was finally invented. However, people are going after more developments and diving so deeply inside the ocean of technology since it became so important to us; almost like the air we breathe!!

Long time ago chalkboards were the main technique used to explain the lessons in schools. “A blackboard (UK English) or chalkboard (US English) is a reusable writing surface on which text or drawings are made with sticks of calcium sulfate or calcium carbonate, known, when used for this purpose, as chalk”( Blackboard – Wikipedia .2013). Also, you wouldn’t imagine the huge change it brought to the world and specially to the education field back then, because it saved so much of the teacher’s time and energy, since the teacher was finally able to explain the lessons easily to the entire class at once instead of writing the problems and the lessons to each student separately in the class. In addition, chalkboards were so useful due to the fact that it doesn’t require any special care, it’s easier in drawing and it’s so cheap comparing with the modern white board and the new SMART board. On the other hand chalk produces dust, which is thought to be uncomfortable or may be allergic to some people and it would also harm dust-sensitive equipment such as computers.

As technology progressed, white boards were invented. In addition, a white board is a plain plastic surface that could be written or drawn on with specific markers and then erased easily, and it also took the chalkboards place. Moreover, whiteboards became so famous and popular across the world in the mid-1990s. Consequently, they have become necessary and commonly found in meeting rooms, school classrooms and offices. Furthermore, the Korean war vet and photographer Heit invented the first whiteboard in the 1950’s when he discovered that the surface of film negatives could be written on with sharpie pen while working with film negatives. Also, white boards are highly important since they are considered to be perfect projecting platform for a video or overhead projector and the markers are easier to hold than a piece of chalk. However, we are facing some issues with the white board such as the fact it’s ugly and permanent, the odor smell from markers and if the wrong ink is used it can be impossible to remove!

Nowadays, the common whiteboard in our classrooms is being replaced or in other words updated by a newer version of this invention, which is the smart board. In fact, SMART Technologies is the company that created the SMART Board, by the hard working of David Martin and Nancy Knowlton who produced the first SMART board to the world in 1991. Furthermore, “it was the first interactive whiteboard to provide touch control of computer applications and annotation over standard Microsoft Windows applications” (Smart Board - Wikipedia. 2013). In addition, SMART boards are now being used through the tray that holds the digital pens; it has two functional mouse buttons, allowing the user to perform common functions. As well as, SMART boards are absolutely great inventions because you can open the world up for your audience; it’s large and really grabs the audience attention so they can stay focused. Nevertheless, the SMART board system is heir to the same problems that computer and projector setups have and it’s a very expensive device. However, we predict in the future people who are using the SMART Boards we know now by the touch control are going to command through visual attention or spoken commands instead. Although, the idea of inventing devices with this high technology might seem impossible and unbelievable, someday and somehow it might become a reality.

To sum up, the smart board is a great invention as an education device. It’s the technology generation, that’s why smart boards would interest the students, grap their attention and help the teachers explaining the lesson easier and more professional. However, science wouldn’t stop here! People are going to keep working, exploring and developing till they invent something newer and better.

summarizing & referencig

I enjoyed learning summarizing & referencing because it will help me in my academic life. It will help me to convert the long sentences to few words. It is important to use the references to reserve the copy rights of the writer and tells us who wrote this information and one day if I wrote something and publishes it to the public I would like to see my name when someone’s copy my work or else I will sue them.

In my opinion, the reference part is the easiest due to the fact it takes few minutes and the methods we learnt are easy, simple and smooth. On the other hand, the summery  takes  a lot of time because you to read the entire article, the method is a bit long and there are many steps like rephrasing and finding the main idea and its depended on how much I understand the text.

This information will help my in the future, if I was asked at work to do a research or a report I would use the methods and the skills I learnt in summarizing and referencing to do what I was told. Also, when doing a presentation I would summarize my ideas and be as brief as possible so the audience won’t get bored.

I would like to learn another class like 1103 in the future, because I consider this class very important and useful for my future and it will help in doing my work in a professional way and improve my skills in English.

Houbara bustards

Houbara bustards are in an endangered bird species. Their numbers have been decreased a lot by hunting, poaching. Abu Dhabi Government has made a wild life centers and finance it in Morocco to produce Houbara birds. ”Every stage of the bird’s lives is carefully managed” (Todorova, V. 2011) .Chicks will be divide to two groups, one of them will keep for breeding and the other will send to the wild. Baby birds are released in two seasons spring and autumn, and they except during hunting in autumn. ”A year after their release, an average of 65 per cent of the bird survives” (Todorova, V. 2011). The scientists are monitoring the birds after releasing them in the wild to facilitate the process of breeding birds.
